Legal Services of Southern Missouri Spotlights Work of Attorney James R. Sharp

James R. Sharp has been practicing family law for over 20 years in the Springfield area. Jim's practice is devoted primarily to family law, child support, custody and visitation, divorce, wills, litigation and appeals. His firm, Sharp & Bredesen, is one of the few law firms in Missouri that handle family law appeals. Jim began his volunteer work with Legal Services of Southern Missouri (LSSM) in 1996. In addition to representing low-income individuals who cannot afford an attorney, Mr. Sharp has been an invaluable recourse to the staff and other pro bono attorneys. Jim often provides information and input as to various appellate issues, probate cases, and family law matters when LSSM staff and other volunteer attorneys need guidance. Jim also volunteers his time to share his knowledge and expertise by serving as a presenter at various legal education trainings.

LSSM, in partnership with the Missouri State Public Defenders Office launched a pilot project "Helping Parents Help Children" which focuses on non-support criminal cases in Barry, Christian, Dade, Greene, Lawrence, Stone and Taney Counties. Jim Sharp accepted the first case under this pilot project and by the time the case went to trial, Jim was able to prove both children were emancipated and secured a reduction on the child support arrearages for the client.

Jim has the wherewithal to recognize the multitude of unique issues that plague the low income population and accordingly provides vehement and zealous representation to LSSM's clients.

Jim is a member of The Missouri Bar and the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association.

Mid-Missouri Legal Services Creates Disaster Document Checklist

Mid-Missouri Legal Services Corporation (MMLS) created the Disaster Document Checklist to assist Missourians in preparing for disasters.  Prompted by the recent tornado in Joplin, Missouri and flooding occurring across the state, MMLS Staff Attorneys constructed the Checklist in an effort to educate Mid-Missourians about important documents that are difficult or impossible to replace following a disaster.  By reviewing the Disaster Document Checklist, individuals can protect important personal information from being destroyed.

Two days after the worst tornado disaster of the past 60 years, Joplin area residents are taking their first tentative steps at recovering. Missourians in Poplar Bluff and Cape Girardeau areas are still not sure how much damage has been done to their farms and homes. In the weeks and months ahead, those affected by these two disasters will be rebuilding their lives with the help of Missouri lawyers, led by the Young Lawyers' Section Council and with the cooperation of the ABA YLD.
